Because I'm an intern at Howdy! Farm this fall, what is my project you may ask?
Well I'll be working on two projects:
1) The Howdy! Farm farmers market
2) Water quality (salinity in the water used to grow crops)
I plan (already doing) some research on what other options we have
in selling the produce that we grow. Like growing herbs and drying them to
make herbal teas, there is talk about starting to pickle certain vegetables
(we'll keep you posted about that)
I am also researching organic fertilizers, recycled planters (DIY project)
and sugar substitutes (for our herbal teas!)
For testing water salinity I will be using 2 types of water:
RO water (reverse osmosis effluent)
College Station, TX water (which is known to have high salinity)
and I will test both water using celery as my control crop.
Celery is known to not grow very will in a high salinity environment.
I will also be researching other crops that cannot grow in a high salinity environment.
Don't forget volunteer hours are MWF 1-5pm
and our Farmers Market hours at the Howdy Farm are T&Th 1-5pm!
Come see us!
