Friday:
Our flight to Basel, Switzerland took off around 5 pm, and it was a relatively short flight, I was told it was about an hour flight but I swear it felt like 30 minutes. When we landed in Basel we rented cars to drive to Leukerbad where our hotel was at. The car ride was probably the scariest part of the trip because there was SOOOO many switchbacks going up the mountain the hotel was on, because it was night time already and it was a 3 hour drive... OH and I can't forget to mention the cable car train... yes a cable car train. Apparently to shorten the amount of time to go up the mountain you can pay 27 CHF to park on a train in your car and take the train up the mountain. And you're not supposed to get out of the car when the train takes off but us Americans saw locals get out of the car so copying the locals, we got out of the car and stayed out through 100+kph winds practically about to be flown away before we decided to get back into the car and see that no one else was out there besides us.... needless to say we were hungry and exhausted when we arrived in Leukerbad.
Saturday:
First thing Saturday we took off to a lift to take us to a hiking trail in the mountains. That hiking trail either took us to several lakes or to a cottage in the Swiss Alps. We decided to take the trail to the cottage, we heard there was another trial that could take you to some glaciers 45 minutes past the cottage. It was a long and treacherous journey, we hiked so much and ended up reaching 2300+ m above sea level. We first reached the cottage where we all bought well deserved Swiss beers and ate our lunch. Then we hiked up a nearby glacier, we also got to try glacier runoff water, and IT WAS AMAZING! I've never tried anything so refreshing/clean/amazing in my life. I never thought I would have the ability or courage to do what I did that day, but it was completely worth it. I have never seen anything so beautiful in my life, and I had never felt so accomplished. After we got back from our hike, we ate dinner and I took a very long and hot bath.
Sunday:
Sunday was our last day in Leukerbad, we decided to take a trip to Bern where we ate fondue and checked out the city for a couple of hours, our hostel for the night was in Basel (where our flight landed/took off) and wanted to check in sooner that day. We were all still very tired. We didn't explore much of Basel because most of the shops were closed (Sunday) and we were still very tired from all the hiking and driving from locations.
Monday:
We stayed at the YMCA hostel in Basel, Switzerland. It was my first hostel and Thank God it was. The hostel was really nice and quaint, the staff was great and helpful. I heard horror stories about some hostels and I still believe them to be true but I did get very lucky with this one. We didn't explore much of Basel on Monday since our flight back to Belgium was that day.
